Now in its eighth year, the Awards celebrate the documentation, preservation and reuse of modern buildings, structures and landscapes built in the United States or on U.S. territory. The Awards recognize those building owners, design teams, advocacy and preservation organizations that have made significant efforts to retain, restore and advocate for the aesthetic and cultural value of such places.
The fifteen recipients of the 2021 Modernism in America Awards highlight the best in preservation practice by today’s architects, designers, and preservation professionals, for modern sites, landscapes and beyond. The 2021 Awards acknowledge holistic approaches in all categories including in the Design category where projects were applauded for accomplishing highly successful restorations while maintaining a light touch and respect for the original design intent, at times with relatively small budgets. Winners in the Inventory/Survey category stood out for the ability to aggregate massive quantities of disparate information and present it to the public in an enjoyable and user-friendly format. The Advocacy Awards serve as a reminder that although there is not always a positive outcome, the hard work of individuals and organizations can have beautiful results.
