For many in the Bay Area, Lake Merritt is beautiful, civic, gleaming, and strange, as only the vast possibilities of public space can conjure. Its mid-century years, 1945-1976, are the focus of Docomomo US/Northern California’s Tour Day, following the Docomomo US theme of “Recreation and Play.”
Tour Day 2026 at Lake Merritt will explore biomorphic, geodesic, and brutalist structures that shaped mid‑century recreation and play in the heart of Oakland, and will consider what this multi‑scalar landscape reveals about the lasting impacts of modernism and urban renewal on public space today.
We will consider how Modern design shaped civic life at Lake Merritt—from recreation and cultural facilities to infrastructure, open-space planning, and urban-renewal impacts. Along the route, participants will encounter over a dozen mid-century works, including the Oakland Museum of California, Mid-Century Monster, Geodesic Bird Dome, Lakeside Park Garden Center & Gardens of Lake Merritt, and Sail Boat Club House, to examine the period’s evolving ideas about public space, recreation, leisure, housing, and the city.
The tour is led by board member Petra Marar, an historic landscape architect working in Oakland, CA. It is presented as part of Docomomo Northern California's 2026 Tour Day.
The route is approximately 2.2 miles and lasts about two hours, including stops for interpretation. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, use sun protection, bring water, and dress for Oakland’s changing weather.
