Docomomo US Modern Mexico City is one in a series of exclusive modern architecture, art and design travel experiences. This nine-day, eight-night trip will focus exclusively on Mexico City’s modern architecture, art and design. Guests will stay at the Camino Real Polanco - the legendary hotel designed by Ricardo Legorreta in 1965.

Highlights of the tour include a special visit to the house and studio of Luis Barragán and the Barragán designed Gilardi House; many important sites by the Mexican architect Mario Pani including the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) campus (pictured above); the Rivera-Kahlo house and studio designed by Juan O’Gorman; and a special full day exploration of the works by Felix Candela including the breathtaking Los Manantiales restaurant (bottom left). Guests will have the opportunity to visit some of the most important works by Diego Rivera including the murals at the Palacio Nacional (bottom right) and Carcamo de Rio Lerma, with an afternoon visit to the Anahuacalli Museum. A full day tour to the archeological site Teotihuacan is planned. This is unique travel opportunity in a small group setting featuring access to modern homes and buildings considered off the beaten path or not ordinarily open to the public. 

Modern Mexico City will be led by Louise Noelle Gras, professor and researcher at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Ms. Gras is the former editor of the magazine Arquitectura/México; contributor to numerous architectural journals and author of many books on Mario Pani, Ricardo Legorreta, Enrique del Moral, Luis Barragán, Arquitectos contemporáneos de México, and Guía de Arquitectura Contemporánea de la Ciudad de México.

Day 1 Saturday, October 8 

• Independent travel to Mexico City
• Dinner at the Centro Castellano in the Camino Real Hotel 
• Accommodations: Camino Real Polanco 

Day 2 Sunday, October 9: Mexico City: Historic Center/Zocalo

• Guests begin in the Zócalo, visit the Cathedral and head over to the Palacio National to see the Rivera murals.
• After lunch return by the Paseo de la Reforma and Palacio de Bellas Artes.
• Depending on accessibility, we will visit Candela’s Los Manantiales restaurant in the evening.
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Day 3 Monday, October 10: Modern Suburbs/Modern Houses

• In the morning we depart to visit the Barragán House/Studio, Casa Gilardi, Chapultepec Park and Cárcamo de Rio Lerma.
• After lunch guests have the opportunity to enjoy the Condesa neighborhood for shopping or dinner. 
• Breakfast and lunch included

Day 4 Tuesday, October 11: Mexican Modern Icons

• This morning guests will visit the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and then Anahuacalli Museum conceived and created by Diego Rivera and designed by Juan O’Gorman.
• In the afternoon we will visit Casa Prieto López, the Rivera-Kahlo house and studio and tour the Cecil O’Gorman house. 
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

 

Day 12 Wednesday, October 20: Teotihuacan

• Departure to Teotihuacan and visit the archeological site and nearby museum.
• Lunch in the subterranean LA GRUTA before continuing to Acolman for a visit of the 16th Century Temple and the monastery. BL 

Day 6 Thursday, October 13: Felix Candela in Mexico City

• Today guests will have the opportunity to visit many sites designed by Felix Candela. In the morning we will travel to Cuadra San Cristobal and Las Arboledas with Los Clubes and the Bacardi bottling plant (if accessible).
• In the afternoon stops include El Altillo Chapel, San Vicente de Paul Chapel, Medalla Milagrosa Church and the Mario Pani designed Multifamiliar Alemán.
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner included 

Day 7 Friday, October 14: Art & Architecture

• This morning we will visit the Anthropology Museum and Tamayo Museum.
• Afternoon departure to Museo “El Eco” and then to Tlatelolco and visit Conjunto habitacional Nonoalco-Tatelolco, Plaza de las Tres Culturas, Church with art work by Mathias Goeritz.
• Breakfast and lunch included 

Day 8 Saturday, October 15: Modern for the Masses

• On this last full day we will visit Edificio Semarnat by Ricardo Legorreta, and one or two more by Juan Segura on our way to San Angel for a shopping excursion to the Bazaar Sábado.
• In the afternoon we will tour of Las Lomas de Chapultepec and visit the Anglican Church by Carlos Mijares.
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner included

Day 9 Sunday, October 16

• After breakfast we say adios to Mexico City.

Program rate: $4,195 per person, double occupancy

Passenger Deposits

Passenger deposits are $600 per person and are non-refundable. Cancellation and interruption coverage is strongly recommended to protect passengers against cancellation fees. 

Deadline for deposits is June 10, 2022. 

 

Final Payments

Final payments are due at 75 days prior to departure. Reservations received after this date will be on a request basis and must be accompanied by payment in full. All passenger payments are subject to the following cancellation schedule. Cancellation of reservations must be made in writing (fax, email or postal mail) and are subject to the following charges:
