Horton Plaza

Site overview

Horton Plaza is one of the most significant examples of the Post-Modern style offering eclectic forms, color and excitement in a uniquely public shopping space. Designed by "experiential architect" Jon Jerde with supergraphics by Deborah Sussman and Paul Prejza, it was billed as a way to revitalize the downtown Gaslamp Quarter. When it opened in 1985 it drew over 30 million visitors in its first year, propelling the careers of the designers, and redefining the concept of the American shopping mall.
