The Pawa'a neighborhood has a collection of mid-century commercial, apartment and mixed use buildings designed by local architects of fame. From International Style office buildings, to floating Chinese restaurants, to sunshades galore, this walking tour showcases the eclecticism and range of architecture at Hawaii's mid-century.

This will be a unique opportunity to visit two residences designed by George Wimberly of Wimberly & Cooke. First will be the house that Wimberly designed in 1945 for his own family which he conceived as open flowing spaces with attention to cross ventilation for comfort in a tropical climate. Next is a Japanese style pavilion house that is set in a lush private garden with views across the Manoa Valley. Because both houses are accessed via uneven exterior stairs, this tour is not appropriate for those with limited mobility.

See how the “masters of Hawaii” incorporated local building traditions and materials in many of their projects and their innovative ideas of blending Eastern and Western architectural forms in a conscious manner. Enchanted by Hawaii’s vivid beauty and its benevolent climate, exotic flora, and cosmopolitan culture, the architects sought to capture the aura of the Islands in their architectural designs.

The Queen Emma Gardens tour takes participants from the State Capitol Building through downtown with visits/views of a number of Honolulu’s mid-century highlights on the way to the termination point at Minoru Yamasaki’s Queen Emma Gardens apartment complex. Along the way, we’ll see the brutalist Bank of Hawai‘i building and stroll through the Victor Gruen designed Financial Plaza of the Pacific and Fort Street Mall.

The Asian Influences tour will primarily look at Buddhist temples constructed in the post-war period. Sites will include the Honpa Hongwanji, which was built in 1918, and served as a prototype for temples built in a style which incorporated, Japanese, mughal and western forms. This temple had a major addition in 1954, and also a Japanese-modern administration building constructed in the 1950s. Other temples will include the Soto Zen temple and the Honolulu Myohoji. In addition two columbariums at Kyoto Gardens, which render Kyoto's Kinkaku-Ji and the Sanju Pagoda in Nara in concrete. Also included on the tour will be the former Chinese Consulate.

Visit a few of the many churches built in Hawaii during the Mid-Century, a time of unprecedented growth of a great diversity of religions in Hawaii. The tour will take you to a variety of these churches, built to inspire. Newspapers in the 1960s discussed the “way out” and “new look” of Hawaii churches “based on imaginative thinking.”

The Kahala District, East of Diamond Head, is known for large homes facing the ocean and gracious winding streets with mid-century residences. The tour highlight will be a rare opportunity to walk through the 1958 home of internationally acclaimed artist Jean Charlot that he designed in collaboration with Pete Wimberly. There will also be a stop at the luxurious Kahala Hotel (1964), and an unaltered Vladimir Ossipoff house.

This self-guided walking tour shows you the splendor of the Gold Coast, luxurious condominum listings with stretching lanais and panoramic views of the ocean, all built at mid-century. These ecclectic and modern buildings designed by some of Hawaii's most famous architects represent what tropical urban living could look like.

The University of Hawaii campus walking tour provides a rare treat for symposium attendees to explore the Mid-Century Modern buildings on the main educational facility in Hawaii. As Hawaiiʻs economy prospered and grew through the 1950s and 1960s so did its premier educational facility. Students will be docents along the way to educate the participants on the various local architects and their relationship to Hawaii’s climate and culture.
